Perm State Art Gallery (PSAG) is one of the biggest art museums in the Ural region. Its collections number about 43000 items. They contain works of the 15th-20th c. The gallery possesses collections of antique ceramics, ancient Egypt arts, and Tibet bronze objects as well as works of applied arts from Japan, India and China.

PSAG was opened in 1922. It is housed in the former cathedral church of Christ Transfiguration, the architectural monument of the 19th c. Since the early days of its existence the gallery has become the regional artistic center. Since 1925 the gallery exhibitions of contemporary Ural art, the prototype of the future regional art exhibitions, have been held. In 1929 the first Russia department of the contemporary art was opened in the museum. It laid the foundation for the 20th c. native art collection acquisition.

In the 1970-90s along with the education and acquisition programs the gallery activity was mainly focused on culturological projects, including art exhibitions, art salons, scientific research conferences and new educational programs that gained a wide public recognition and attracted the leading art experts, specialists and distinguished scholars from both Perm and various regions of Russia. Collected articles and reports of scientific conferences as well as catalogues of gallery collections and exhibitions are being regularly published.

There have been held continuous exchanged joint exhibitions with art museums of Moscow, St.Petersburg and other art centers of Russia. In 1999 there was an exhibition 'That is a man' in Pushkin State Art Museum in Moscow where the religious wooden sculptures from Perm were on show together with wooden sculpture from Germany. In October of 2000 the items of the gallery collections were displayed at the exhibition 'The treasures of Perm land' in Moscow Treatyakov Gallery. Since the 1990 s. PSAG has been establishing international relations with artistic centers worldwide. They have resulted in the new exhibitions of contemporary European (British and German) and American artists and joint scientific practical conferences. In 2000 PSAG took part in the EXSPO-2000' exhibition in Hanover. At present the major aim of the gallery is to update its diverse performance as a whole (registration techniques, storage practice, collection management policies, scientific research, museum educational programs, exhibition organization, library activities, public and community relations) based on the new information technologies.

Owing to its many-faceted activities the gallery fulfills the mission of a public institute in the culture system that preserves, studies and presents its collections to the broad public thus promoting integration of the regional local culture into the national and European cultural processes.
